For kids with energy to burn, Brecon Leisure Centre provides badminton, swimming, fitness classes, gym and tennis. If they’re still not worn out, there’s rock climbing at Llangorse Activity Centre, horse riding at Tairderwyn stables, and caving, abseiling and more from Black Mountain Activities.
Enjoy a therapeutic and amusing trek through the Beacons with Alpaca My Boots. Don’t forget your camera. Meet the goats and pigs, ride the horses and invade the heated indoor play area at Cantref Adventure Play Farm. Or say hi to owls, guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks and chickens at the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre in Kington.
Ride the Brecon Mountain Railway into the heart of the National Park, along the Taf Fechan Reservoir and high up to Torpantau. Refresh in the tearooms and exit through the gift shop. Walk Brecon Promenade and see the lovely River Usk or visit the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum to hear about some of the army’s most famous regiments.
Go down under at Dan yr Ogof, the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, a 17-kilometre long cave system. Or head to Zip World Tower, boasting panoramic views and home to Phoenix, the world’s fastest seated zip line, and the Tower Coaster, a 25mph side-by-side roller-coaster cart track with tunnels, dips and banked corners.
Come to Cradoc Golf Club for the natural surroundings, the abundance of wildlife, mature tree-lined fairways, and a challenging parkland course. Or swing your clubs at the equally beautiful, nine-hole Brecon Golf Club. Or hire Specialized bikes from Bikes and Hikes, with advice on the best routes the Beacons have to offer.
This is walking country, and some of the best routes include the Four Falls Trail, a circular trek through the Brecon Beacons’ waterfall country set in beautiful woodlands. Climb Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales, or Fan Brycheiniog and Mynydd Du. Or explore the dark skies of the Fforest Fawr Geopark.
Fishing? Try the Brecon Canal, the River Usk, Llangors Lake and The Derew. Book a half-day or full day on the River Wye with Celtic Canoes, or try just about anything outdoors with Black Mountain Activities, including archery, caving, abseiling, gorge adventuring, land carting and orienteering.
Go back in time and catch the magnificent architecture and stained glass of Brecon Cathedral, or Raglan, the ‘grandest castle ever built by Welshmen’ and designed to impress as much as to intimidate. Potter Hay-on-Wye for books or take a whisky-and-chocolate tour of Penderyn Distillery.
Well-behaved hens and stags are welcome at Coed Farm. There’s plenty on site to keep the party swinging, including the cinema room with 75-inch smart TV, living room with squishy L-shaped sofa and 64-inch smart TV. Catch a match on the smart TV or have a nosey through Netflix.
Outside, you can sizzle away an hour or so in the sauna, then bubble and boil in the eight-seat hot tub. Wait for night to fall and scan the dark skies for ever-expanding galaxies of hydrogen and helium. Towel off and gather round the firepit for late-night pizza and Prosecco. There’s pool and darts on tap in the games room.
