Country kids

There’s some innovative fun in North Wales these days. Consider Zip World, home to the world’s fastest zip line, underground golf, quarry karts, a cavern trip complete with via ferrata and more. Or try Bounce Below for an underground trampolining experience built into an area twice the size of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Take a hike through local history at the National Slate Museum or explore your inner monkey at Totally Ape. Ride heritage narrow-gauge railways, including the Ffestiniog Railway through the highlands and the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Or resolve not to cheat and climb Wales’ highest peak on foot.

Head to the Welsh Mountain Zoo to meet leopards, lemurs and more, or find cuddlier animals at The Rabbit Farm, such as ponies, donkeys and bunnies. Or see Floss the donkey, pigs, rabbits, calves and ducks at the Children’s Farm Park. Or drive to lovely beaches at Abersoch, Porthmadog and Harlech for crabs and coves.

Hire bikes from 1085 Adventures in Beddgelert. See seals, porpoises and seabirds on a fast boat trip out to Bardsey Island. Enjoy segway, quad-biking, paintball and more at Dragon Raiders Activity Park. Or walk the hills with your new furry friends at Black Rock Llamas, then try your hand at agility sessions. The llamas, not you.

For the grown ups

Love golf? Enjoy 18 holes with a fine view out over Cardigan Bay at Porthmadog Golf Club. Keep the scenery going at Royal St David’s, long ranked in Britain’s top 50 courses and number two in Wales according to Golf World. Or play the beautiful championship course at Nefyn Golf Club.

Or ditch the clubs and just walk from the door, up the Moel y Gest, through the woods to Tremadog, to Black Rock Sands. Pick up our booklets with local circular walks on the Llyn Peninsula and towards Harlech. Or pick up some courage and ride the ton-up zip wires at Zip World.

Ride the world’s first inland surf lagoon at Adventure Parc Snowdonia. Fish for carp from 8am to dusk at Eisteddfa Fisheries. Explore quaint and quirky towns such as Caernarfon, with its street market and food festival, or visit Portmeirion, a charming Italianate style village nestled on the coast of North Wales.

Head to Glaslyn Wildlife to watch the ospreys: maybe you’ll adopt one as you leave. Sup Elderflower Beer, Black Rock Stout or Snowdonia Ale at the Purple Moose Brewery. Or wander through the past at historic castles at Criccieth, Harlech and Caernarfon, and homes and gardens at Bodnant and Cadnant.
