Between the moors and the sea

Between the moors and the sea, you’ll be torn between the golden beaches and hidden coves around the coast and the wooded valleys, tumbling rivers and granite tors of Dartmoor. Potter the pretty streets of Ivybridge and Totnes, take a boat trip, learn to ski or surf. Or just wander down the lane for a pint in the pub.

Kids Ahoy

Head towards the coast and you will be greeted with an amazing selection of golden beaches and hidden coves. For the adventurous among us, water sports are available at many of the larger beaches while the smaller coves offer a peaceful retreat and are perfect for relaxing with a good book and a picnic.

If you want a beach holiday without the crowds, Mothecombe beach is one of the quieter beaches in South Devon. Large and unspoilt, it is a great day out with the kids and a picnic. On the other side of the estuary, Wonwell Beach is a favourite for locals and visitors.

Complete your day out with a river boat trip to Dartmouth Castle from the town quay, landing you a minute’s walk from the castle. One of the most picturesquely-sited fortresses in England. For over 600 years Dartmouth Castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy, vibrant port of Dartmouth.

Surfers know Bantham Beach as the South Coast’s premier surfing beach, home to much wildlife with its rare sand dune habitat. Also well known for The Sloop Inn serving good pub food including lots of local fresh fish right near the beach.

For the Grown Ups

Six historic towns form The South Hams, each with their own individual charm and unique characteristics; Dartmouth, Salcombe, Ivybridge, Totnes, Kingsbridge and Modbury. Meander along the pretty narrow streets and historic harbours and you will find a fantastic selection of gift shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants and bars.

Modbury is an historic market town set in a beautiful rural location, between the unspoiled golden sandy beaches of South Devon and and the extensive wilderness of Dartmoor.

Situated in the heart of Modbury, The Exeter Inn serves good traditional home cooked food using local produce. Real ales, lagers, and good wines can be enjoyed in a relaxing environment around the log fire in winter or in the traditional walled garden in summer.

Enjoy a spot of shopping in Salcombe with its chic nautical stores and enticing coffee shops and enjoy some Salcombe Dairy ice cream. Salcombe’s narrow streets house boutique shops, art galleries and delicatessens. Farmers’ markets supply the local gourmet restaurants, pubs and cafes.  Sweet shops sell the most delicious fudge.

Join the yachting crowd and charter a yacht for the day. Have a go at surfing, windsurfing, kayaking or water skiing. Away from the water you can play golf at Thurlestone, Bigbury or Dartmouth Golf Courses.
