All is white with the world by Sussex’s Camber Sands and just two minutes’ walk from the kitesurfers, the beachcombers and the grasses that dot the dunes. Here, the The White House has that bleachy, beached look that tells of life lived by the mood of the tides and the ever-changing cast of characters who roam the shores.
Fling open the three sets of French doors, spill out onto the patio and take in the views of the dunes. This is the place to set the steaks to sizzle and the wine to chill as the sea breezes drift across the dunes and the gulls wheel and squawk overhead.
When you’re back from the beach, chuck your driftwood on the woodburner, break out the cards or movies and make some memories. When the sun dips below the horizon, you’ll be lulled to sleep by the wash of the waves and the cossetting of the cotton sheets.
Is the garden the beach, or the beach the garden? That’s the beauty of Seaspray Cabin. That, and the grassy dunes that pan towards the blue horizon and the crash of the waves on the Sussex shore.
The interior here is a joy, but the rear windows and French doors celebrate the view. So much so, that you’ll want to join it outdoors. Fling open the doors, break out the bubbly, and set the steaks to sizzle in the ocean air. With table, parasol and chairs ready and waiting, it would be rude not to.
The garden’s a daydream, but you’ll want to keep going, lured by the crash of the surf and the salt in the air. Open to the dunes, Seaspray Cabin offers the illusion of private access to your very own beach.
Watch the land-yachters and kite-surfers, rummage in the rock pools, build castles of sand in the land of battles and sieges, walk the beach at twilight. This is as much about golden sands as it is about white décor.
Inside, all is beachy and peachy. On the edge of Camber Sands, everything is all white with the world. The living room? White. The kitchen? White. The floorboards? Take a guess. If it’s not white, it’s not far off and simply serves to accentuate the whiteness of everything else.
The open-plan arrangement adds to the sense of light, airy space, and renovations have created a feeling of chilled beach life. Antique and vintage furniture contributes to the air of washed-out chic. Wood panels, finished in gentle shades of pale grey and white, add to the beach theme.
At the back of the cabin, all is glass. Three sets of French doors and four sets of windows pay homage to the sandy views. Separate sitting rooms can be shut off for movie nights or solitary escapes. If the sun dips early over the horizon, you can feed the woodburner with driftwood and spin some tales.
Among the shabby chic sit some modern miracles. There’s wifi for keeping in touch, a coffee maker for early-morning brews with dune views, a dishwasher to spare your hands, and TVs and DVDs for family film nights.
Reclamation doesn’t mean losing out on sophistication, especially in the kitchen. A white enamelled Bertazzoni cooker invites you to turn up the heat on a family feast. If you don’t fancy it yourself, we can step in. Just whistle and our chefs will prepare everything from a celebratory meal to a fully catered holiday.
The professional cooker comes with other modern marvels including fridge/freezers, dishwasher and washer/dryer. You’ll dine with a view, in open-plan splendour with a front-row seat on the garden and the dunes beyond, where the gulls wheel and the clouds tug across the open skies.
For bites and beers, it’s just 200 metres to the nearest pub. Try Romney Marsh lamb with all the trimmings. Further afield, there’s a beachy theme at the Rye Bay Café, with scampi and beer-battered cod sitting next to beach-hut table décor.
For a fine-dining treat garnished with a Michelin star, try Curlew, just half an hour distant by car. Pick from pigeon with pearl barley, Barbury duck or lemon sole with brown-shrimp butter.
Sleeping 13, The White House offers four bedrooms to squabble over. Bedroom 1 comes with kingsize bed and elegant French doors onto the main living space. Take in the views at the back, sleep with your window open and drift off to the sound of the breaking waves. There’s a smart TV for a midnight movie in bed. Maybe Ocean’s 13.
Bedroom 2 is another double or twin with extra single, so it’s small-family-friendly. Kids can fight over the top bunk in bedroom 3. In fact, with two bunks and a trundle, this room is good for five crib lizards. Bedroom 4 comes with options as a snug or TV room. If you need more space for tired heads, there’s a generous double sofa bed.
Need even more sleep space? The sofa in the main living room does a great job moonlighting as a daybed. Colour schemes? You can have any colour you like, provided it’s white.
