Soulful charm and wood-fired sizzle

Swallows Croft positively drips with honeyed Cotswold beauty. Sitting among a grove of fruitful perry trees, this is five bedrooms-worth of soulful charm, peaceful contemplation and stout walking. Head down to Winchcombe, the kind of place where you place a pound in an honesty box for half a dozen eggs, and lace up your boots.

If you could hear Swallows Croft, it would be the sound of silence punctuated by the trill of a goldfinch. If you could taste it, it would be a hearty winter stew or a summer salmon salad on the terrace washed down with a crisp Pinot Grigio. You can do all that here, thanks to the six-burner range cooker and delicious raised patio.

While you’re out there, it’d be rude not to climb into the wood-fired hot tub with wall-mounted TV. Stay wet for some sociable sizzle in the sauna. Shower off, then tackle some table tennis, sear your steaks and sausages on the gas barbecue, and collapse in the evening around the firepit.

Inside, the lush never lets up. Stock up from Food Fanatics deli, cook in the spacious, sociable kitchen, and eat in the panelled dining room with its roaring logs and the farmhouse table that also offers after-dinner snooker. Play table football in the snug, chat around the stove in the main sitting room, soak up the garden views. Hide the key.

Hot tub, gardens and grounds

The garden is beautiful, with wild flowers and private pathways, but it’s the outdoor spa area that steals its thunder. With a wall-mounted 34” TV sitting above the eight-person, wood-fired hot tub, you’re going to be mighty crinkly when you emerge. If and when you do, you’ll probably want to wander into the sauna to sizzle awhile.

Shower off, then play a little ping-pong and gather on the rattan chairs around the firepit. Let the kids loose on the swings, be forever England with croquet. Eat al-fresco on the raised sun terrace around the ten-seat handmade dining table, with meat seared on the gas barbecue. Watch your dog doesn’t pinch the sausages. Pass the Prosecco.

Living spaces

Relax amid exposed-stone walls, calming neutrals and baskets of logs ready to load onto the fire to fuel your next late-night chinwag. Tune in to Netflix on the 65” smart TV in front of the cosy stone fireplace in the snug. Or try alternative viewing on the 55-incher in the sitting room.

With your wellies baking in the wet room, repair to the sitting room with its sociable spaces dotted with two two-seater sofas and three three-seaters. Open the French doors to the garden, choose a match or a movie, and throw another log on the fire. Wiggle your toes, butter the scones, pass the popcorn.

Cosy and cottagey though this may be, the tech’s never in question. The Wi-Fi streams at 80Mbs and you will have music wherever you go, thanks to portable Bluetooth. Raid the games and retro games console in the snug, twist your wrists on the table football, then head to the dining room for a quick dining table/pool table conversion.

Cooking and dining

In your gob-smackingly gorgeous kitchen, you can cook on the electric range oven, electric oven, microwave and gas hob. Backing that up, you’ve got a wine fridge, milk fridge, American-style fridge/freezer, dishwasher, utility room, coffee grinder and butler’s sink. Just passing? Grab a Nespresso on the sit-up island with four stools.

Ten guests? The dining room’s got you covered with the chunky farmhouse table. When you’re done, whip off the top and get the snooker cues out. Keep the fire fed and your glass topped up. You’ll do fine in the cottage garden, too. Raid Food Fanatics for meat, then break out the gas barbie and sit out in the Cotswold sunshine.

Walk, wander or stagger back from the log-lit Royal Oak, Gretton, with its hearty pub fare and pay-and-play tennis court. Tackle some sea trout or pork belly at The Lion in Winchcombe, with veg from local village gardens. Or head to The White Hart in Winchcombe for home-cooked local food, good wines and Fuller’s award-winning ales.

Try Buckland Manor for a country-house experience and fine dining. Or go finer and try the stellar taste of Michelin stars. 5 North Street is just along the road, run by Gus, who trained under Michel Roux and once cooked for President Yeltsin in The Kremlin. Today, he’ll cook creedy carver duck breast or Winchcombe partridge, just for you.

Bedrooms

There’s five tasteful bedrooms to sink into here. Slide in between crisp sheets and try to get up in the morning. Don’t worry: breakfast is served at whenever o’clock and there’s a lovely rolltop bath in the main bathroom to drape a lazy leg over.

The en-suite master bedroom offers a superking bed with zip-and-link facility. Spoil yourself with the attached dressing room. The Green and Blue en-suite bedrooms provide king-size beds, while the Wallpaper bedroom offers a superking zip-and-link. The Picture bedroom comes with two single zip-and-link beds.

A fantastic house and very attentive owner. We had a great stay here at Swallows Croft, the scenery and village is great and the house facilities exceptional. Everyone had a special time and it was the perfect place to all meet up as a family. Hot tub was amazing and beautifully designed house. Would definitely stay again! Thanks. - Mr Loughborough
The entire family including grandchildren enjoyed a very nice stay at Swallows Croft, made extra special by heavy snowfall on the Saturday. Visits were made to the Railway, Stow and Winchcombe. Everyone enjoyed the house, the tasteful furnishings and the well equipped kitchen. The bedrooms and bathrooms were beautifully presented offering comfortable sheets, towels and decor. The children were particularly impressed with the selection of interesting toys and games on offer and the Super Mario game on the TV. The adults also enjoyed Super Mario. The contracted chef and waitress on Saturday found everything they needed to cater for the family. We thank the owner for their attention to detail, including the guest hamper. - Mrs B
A lovely house for a large family weekend together. Well appointed accommodation and a really good location in the beautiful Cotswolds. We had a really nice time. Special thanks to the owner who greeted us on arrival and explained how everything works. We really enjoyed the sauna and hot tub. - Mrs L
My husband and I wanted a home from home experience and we feel we got it. Philip the owner of the property is such a great guy and was there to meet us and show us how everything worked, he was also just at the end of the telephone if we needed him which was great and was only too happy to help with anything we needed and really knowledgeable about the surrounding area. We also took our little dog who loved his garden and the walk up the long path to the field at the top (which is part of the property). There is a little table and chairs and how magical to look down onto the railway line and watch the beautiful heritage steam train appear! I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this house to my family and friends it’s everything you could want for a wonderful holiday in the Cotswolds. - Mrs W
We had a wonderful break at Swallows Croft. The house is beautifully decorated, well equipped with everything you might need and was spotless on our arrival. Philip the owner went out of his way to make sure we had everything we might need including a well stocked hamper and toys for the children. As a group with six children between us we found the house well suited for families and would definitely stay again in the future. - Mrs H
Thank you so much for the wonderful stay at Swallows Croft. We had an absolutely magical time and thank you for all the hard work and effort to make all the little details perfect. I suspect we'll be back. - Mrs B
Thank you for a lovely stay, the house is beautiful. Had all that we wanted including the welcome pack. Enjoyed it immensely. Sauna and hot tub were a treat. - Mrs F
A truly exceptional holiday home, Swallows Croft is the perfect place to stay close to The Cotswolds. Philip was a fantastic host, providing a generous welcome hamper and ensuring we had everything we needed. I can't recommend this place enough - Five stars from Mr E and Friends, Manchester. - Mrs E & Friends
A wonderful stay in a lovely home! We appreciated every little detail that was thought of. Beautifully presented home with every amenity to make for a memorable stay. Great outdoor area for a cosy Cotswolds catch up. - Mr P
A fabulous week away in this house! So well equipped and the hot tub was such a luxury! The welcome hamper and friendly owner who made our welcome to the house such a good start to the holiday! The attention to detail was outstanding! Greet is a beautiful part of the Cotswolds and we thoroughly recommend the steam train experience. We were blessed with good weather, which was an added bonus! If you go to Cheltenham we would recommend The Ivy! Hope to return again! (We will!) - Mrs S
Phillip was very welcoming and went above and beyond to ensure we had the best possible stay ever. Upon arrival Phillip showed us where everything was and how the hot tub, sauna and pool table worked which we loved making use of throughout the weekend! The whole place was very clean and the welcome basket was a nice touch! Location wise, there is a few local pubs. We ended up getting a cheap taxi into Cheltenham a couple nights which has lots of pubs and restaurants. There is also lots of very nice walks in the area too. When leaving one of our party left a bag at the property. Phillip arranged for this to be sent back to us via a courier at his expense which we really appreciated. The only fault with this place for us is that we didn't stay for longer! Highly recommended!! - Mr B
I and my entire family were completely taken aback by this exceptional property. The online photographs just do not do it justice. You are unable to appreciate the quality, size and depth of the property unless you have visited it. No stone has been left unturned in trying to create a home away from home and lots more. We actually spent the entire week trying to think of one thing that could be done by way of improvement and am happy to report that there wasn't anything. The owner has done an amazing job in creating a relaxed and inviting holiday home. From the exquisite welcome hamper with very thoughtful products to the spacious living accommodation to the immaculately kept outdoor spaces.. I could go on! We felt thoroughly spoilt. As a family that normally travels abroad, Swallows Croft made our staycation effortlessly palatable and we would, without hesitation, return. - The M Family

Thank you so much for the lovely selection of cheeses, cakes, wine etc - that was such a lovely touch! We can't wait to book again! Thank you - R, W, & C Families
We have just returned home from a holiday in the beautiful Cotswolds. Our stay in Swallows Croft was a treat: the house was fully equipped with everything we needed; we were amazed at the generous ‘welcome’ hamper and complimentary toiletries; we thoroughly enjoyed using the sauna, hot tub, table football and snooker table. The enclosed garden was beautiful and the large patio allowed us to enjoy a big family barbeque. We always choose to take our vacations in Britain and have been staying in holiday cottages each year since 1989. Swallows Croft was the best we have ever stayed in! - Mrs R

Trains, fruit and boots

Steam through the scenery with the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway. Find and feed piglets and chicks at the Cotswold Farm Park. Or try watersports and more at the Cotswold Water Park. Raid Hayles’ Fruit Farm for seasonal stuff. Shoot 18 holes instead at Naunton Downs. Strap on your boots and walk the Cotswold Way.
