Fizz, fun and stars

In golden sunlight, in the lee of the Somerset Levels, Wyldewoods Farm could pass for a cider advert. Inside, antiques, beams, inglenook fireplaces and flagstone floors provide the setting for family downtime or hen heaven. Burn some logs, roast your dinner, hit the hot tub for fizz, fun and stars. Let the world stand still awhile.

Where the world stands still

The Somerset Levels rise all around. The ancient woodland provides a theatrical backdrop. On a summer’s day, with Wyldewoods Farm bathed in golden sunlight, this could be a cider advert. There’s croquet on the lawn and tennis to be played, while the hot tub promises a night of bubbles, fizz and fun lit by a billion stars.

Wyldewoods Farm is the perfect place for families and hens to down tools and stop being busy. The world stands still here awhile in the wilds of the West Country. Inside, there are antiques, paintings, beams, inglenook fireplaces and original flagstone floors at every turn. Warm your toes around the living-room logs or kitchen Aga.

Tinkle away on the baby grand in the rural silence. Let the kids find the swings and slide. Curl up in the snug with a book, a movie or a board game, lose yourself in the roaring flames in the sitting room, and get together for Sunday roast in regal splendour in the dining room.

Book our chef and put your feet up. Sleep in deep, dreamy comfort, with kids in the attic just a wardrobe away from Narnia. Awake to birdsong and clean country air, walk the woods, savour the silence, eat breakfast on the terrace. Take your foot off the pedal and chill.

Hot tub, gardens and grounds

Wyldewoods Farm sits in five acres of Somerset’s finest. Bathed in the golden glow of the late-afternoon sunshine, with the woods beyond, the farm seems like the setting for a cider advert.

The 25-acre ancient woodland is yours to explore, the terrace is ready for croissants and coffee, and the tennis court is the perfect pre-dinner diversion. Let the kids loose on the wendy house, swings and slide, kick a football around, or go genteel and wield a croquet mallet on the luscious lawn.

Smoke some steak and sausages out on the terrace. Toast the rolling fields. Then, as the sky paints itself pitch black, climb into the six-seat hot tub with a glass of fizz and scan the sky for shooting stars.

Living spaces

Down on a Somerset farm, everything’s as cosy and comfortable as you’d wish it to be. Antiques dot the mantelpieces, heirloom paintings hang on the walls, beams abound, and the inglenook fireplaces sit huge and homely above stoves that bathe book-readers and besocked toe-curlers in a glowing warmth.

You’ve no shortage of sitting rooms. In the third one, you can twirl away at table football or tinkle the keys of the baby grand. Get together in the snug to delve into the DVD collection or pot some balls on the portable pool table.

Kids will beat a path to the playroom board games, puzzles, play food, farm animals, ark with animals, baby toys and quiz book. Adults can escape to any of three log-warmed living rooms. Chat over tea and scones, toast marshmallows or get together en masse for games or gossip.

Connect your iPhone to the stereo, tap into the wifi, or disconnect from the modern world altogether, open the windows and listen to the bleat of the sheep and the play of the wind over the peat levels.

Beneath the beams, by the old dresser, the dining room seats 14 in comfort. If you don’t want to cater for that many, dial up our chef for a one-off celebration or fully catered break. If you do, you’ll get plenty of help from the four-oven Aga, the electric
Hob, oven grill and main oven in the Neptune designer kitchen with flagstone floor.

Prefer eating al fresco? Take a picnic in the parklands or head out to the terrace, to the three large tables and to dip in and out of the hot tub. Light the gas barbie and get everyone out eating steaks and sausages in the Somerset sunshine. For best results, top up your drinks regularly with ice from the American fridge.

For home-cooked food and real ale with a side order of charm and character, try The Lime Kiln Inn. Open fires, cask ales and great fish and chips are the order of the day at Halfway House, while The Devonshire Arms on the village green in Long Sutton offers courtyard dining and adventurous menus.

Take a trip to Taunton for fine dining at The Willow Tree, with two AA Rosettes, a ‘Remy’ and the accolade of one of the Good Food Guide’s ‘top ten romantic places to eat in the UK’. Go fresh, local and seasonal at Castle Bow, or go for plant-based food at The Planet.

Wyldewoods Farm sleeps 13 in five bedrooms. Need a couple more? You’ll want the studio bedroom with shower room in the nearby Cottage. Got first choice? It has to be the en-suite master bedroom with its superking bed and single bed, Victorian claw-footed bath, walk-in shower and dressing room.

Bedroom two is a double with Victorian brass bed, while bedroom three houses a Victorian metal-framed double. Bedroom four is a double that comes with an ornate carved headboard and en-suite bathroom. The attic bedroom sleeps four in a kingsize and two singles.

An overflow bedroom can be used as an additional single to allow one upstairs bedroom to also be a single. This room works well if you need a dog in your bedroom, as they’re not allowed upstairs. Sleep deeply on the Somerset Levels, revelling in the joy of absolute silence.
