Halula Gem
Sleeps 20
Bridgwater, Somerset
Halula Gem is a pink, purple, primary-coloured winner on the edge of the Quantock Hills. This is a Somerset home that looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland and delivers an equally fantastical experience for 20 friends and family. Move in, spread out, relax, play, grow, shrink, drink a few magic potions.
Halula Gem is as much fun as anything you’ll find in Lewis Carroll. Immerse yourself in the indoor hot tub. Dine under the Roman arch. Top up your potions at the indoor bar and your makeup in the glam room. Catch a late-night showing in the movie room. Simmer in the relaxation room. Is there a kitchen disco to dance in? Of course there is.
Fire up the fireplace and get cosy in a historic building overlooking the South West’s River Parrett. Get your besties together, play some pool in the games room, bond over Netflix and Prime, stream the BT Wi-Fi, walk the hills, ride the towpaths, and come home to a West-country wonderland.
A halula’s a honey bun, a snack made from cinnamon, icing and sugar, and much of Halula Gem looks that way: like a sweet shop or extravagant bakery. If there were ever a place to escape reality, this might be it. Move in, kick back, put your feet up by the pink fireplace with the pink pigs.
Spaces here are as fun and funky as funky gets. Let’s kick off with a family film in the movie room with its projector, pink beams, bright-blue columns, exposed-stone walls, and pink beanbags. Light the fire, top up your Prosecco in the pink goblets, and binge out on blockbusters on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Spaces beyond that don’t get any more sober. The bar’s a vision in orange brick. Top up your glasses, then top up your makeup in the glam room. Chill in the spa-like relaxation room and bubble in the hot tub. Play a little pool in the games room. Stream the BT Wi-Fi. Sizzle in the sauna. Bring a little frivolity to your family reunions.
How much fun is Halula Gem? Well, the kitchen’s a disco. There’s a clue. But it gets serious when it puts its apron on. Pick from four ovens and enjoy the services of a microwave, two fridges, a toaster and dishwasher. Deal with the dishes and wrap things up with a Nespresso.
If you’d rather just immerse yourself in the fun and frivolity, give our pro chefs from Full Flavour Events a call. They’re always on hand for anything from a buffet to a banquet. Stock up the fridges with fresh meats, cakes and cookies from The Parrett deli and quality wine and cider from Smith and Evans.
Call Just Eat to order tempting takeaways from Papa John’s Pizza, Moghul India Takeaway, India Cottage Bridgwater, Oscar Fish Bar and Golden House. Guzzle a bottomless brunch at The Firehouse Somerset or tuck into 15-hour cider braised belly pork or arancini at The Babbling Brook.
Sample hearty lunches and international dinners at the 18th-century Bower Inn, or walk to Marco Pierre’s Steakhouse or The Green Olive restaurant for iskender kebabs, chicken halep or calamari rings washed down with strawberry daiquiri or amaretto sours. For pasta, pizza and plant alternatives, Prezzo’s a five-minute walk.
Six delicious en-suite bedrooms, named aptly after gemstones, are adorned with glittered walls and neon signs.
Sleeping 20 family, friends and hens, there’s nothing here to keep you from sleeping like the silent waters of the canal that runs along the front of the house.
Diamond offers two single beds, while Amethyst sleeps three. Pink Sapphire accommodates a king-size bed and a single, while Good as Gold, Rubellite and Tanzanite all sleep four in two superkings.
Kids love primary colours. They love sweet shops. And they love Alice in Wonderland. Halula Gem somehow combines all of these into one perky, pinky, purple explosion of stimulation peppered with neon and Peppa the Pig impersonators. Just don’t give them sweets at bedtime.
There’s stimulus at every turn here. There’s a Roman arch to eat under, a makeup room in which to get glam, an orange-brick indoor bar that surely serves mocktails, a hot tub and sauna for older kids and a shag-pile rug to sit on while eating. Even the kitchen comes dressed as a disco.
Colour can be found everywhere! From the pink fireplace, the pink pigs, the pink-washed makeup room, the orange bar, the multi-coloured dining-room table, the pink beams, and the pink and blue disco kitchen. What’s not to love for young minds?
At night, the movie room (pink and blue with pink beanbags) sits ready to entertain you with Amazon Prime and Netflix. Pink pigs by the fire. Pink drinks goblets at the ready. Bust out the blockbusters, stream the BT Wi-Fi, play pool in the games room (yellow), make a night of it with the big people in front of roaring fires.
