Country kids

On site’s got a decent collection of time-fillers for kids, including toys, games, the cinema room, the indoor pool, hot tub and a lawn ripe for free-range frolics. But Somerset’s got a lot to offer as well, with vitamin D aplenty on the wild, open spaces of the Quantocks and Blackdowns.

Bring your bikes, or hop on a horse from Quantock Trekking. Burn your bangers on the stone barbies in the Quantock woods. Keep up the outdoor adventure at Vivary Park, home to low or high ropes, or clip n’ Climb, the South West’s biggest indoor climbing centre. Or try some sailing, rowing, kayaking or windsurfing at Wimbleball Lake.

Leather-on-willow fans can watch county cricket at Taunton or dive into 150 years of sporting history at the Somerset Cricket Museum. Or enjoy the (officially) best day out in Devon at Crealy Theme Park, with its 60 rides and attractions, spectacular entertainment, live shows, and animal attractions.

Get crafty at Inspired, a store full of creative, arty joys with a table reserved for daily craft sessions. Catch the latest flicks at the Odeon, scatter some pins at Hollywood Bowl, swim or sunbathe at Wiveliscombe Open-air Pool. Or meet dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and long-tailed ponies at Ferne Animal Sanctuary.

For the grown ups

Somerset wouldn’t be Somerset without cider, and Sheppy’s is happy to oblige with a tour and a tasting session. Or how about a walk on the wild side on a trek around the hills with the alpacas of Stoke Wood? Or explore the original art of basket-weaving at Coates Willow Visitor Centre.

See a 200-million-year-old Plesiosaur fossil, the Low Ham Roman mosaic, and shoes worn by 7ft 4 Joseph Sewell at Somerset Museum. Stick around in Taunton to catch a match at the cricket ground. Or head to Vivary Park to pick from tree trails, high ropes, tennis courts, 18-hole golf, or mini golf.

Potter around landscaped Hestercombe Gardens, check out the art gallery, then refuel with afternoon tea. Catch some culture at the Brewhouse Theatre and Arts Centre. Or head outdoors for a day at Langford Nature Reserve.

Drop in on a live music session at Milverton Music Club. Tour the brewery at Wiveliscombe. When darkness drops, try some cocktails in Taunton’s Cosy Club, sample fine dining at Duende, head to The Martlett for the full gastropub treatment and great beers, or just wander down to The Globe for a glass or two.
